Humanoid Robotics Morning Brew - October 8, 2026

  • Boston Dynamics named former Amazon Alexa/AGI chief Rohit Prasad as CEO, effective Oct 7 — only the third CEO in the company's 34-year history, as Hyundai pushes Atlas toward commercial scale.
  • Elon Musk ruled out any TSMC operational role at Terafab: Tesla and SpaceX "will build and run" the Texas AI-chip complex meant to supply Optimus, FSD and SpaceXAI.
  • Otherwise quiet: China's Golden Week ended Oct 8 with local media still silent in the 24-hour window. Two items published rather than padding.

# Boston Dynamics names ex-Amazon Alexa and AGI chief Rohit Prasad as CEO

Boston Dynamics appointed Rohit Prasad as chief executive officer, effective Oct 7, the Hyundai Motor Group-controlled company announced. Prasad spent 12 years at Amazon, rising to senior vice president and head scientist for Alexa and artificial general intelligence, and later led development of the Amazon Nova foundation-model family; before Amazon he spent nearly 14 years at Raytheon BBN Technologies. He succeeds Robert Playter, who stepped down in February after six years (Amanda McMaster served as interim CEO), and is expected to join the board pending approvals. Context: Hyundai is acquiring SoftBank's remaining ~10% stake at a ~USD 3.3B valuation, and targets a factory with 30,000 units of annual robot capacity by 2028, with Atlas deployment at its Georgia plant starting in 2028.

Why it matters: The third CEO in Boston Dynamics' history is an AI-product executive, not a roboticist — a signal Hyundai wants Atlas commercialized as a physical-AI product line. The hire also ends an eight-month leadership gap that saw several senior departures, including the CTO.

# Musk: Tesla and SpaceX will build and run Terafab; TSMC reduced to possible sublease

Elon Musk said Oct 7 that Tesla and SpaceX will build and operate Terafab themselves, ruling out an operational role for TSMC: "Maybe TSMC subleases part of the Terafab if they want, but nothing more than that." The X post follows an Oct 2 Culpium report that TSMC was exploring running the fabs and Musk's Oct 3 acknowledgement of "discussions." Intel CEO Lip-Bu Tan told Bloomberg that Intel remains a partner in the project. Terafab is a planned Texas complex to fabricate AI chips for Tesla vehicles and Optimus humanoids, FSD computers and SpaceXAI/xAI, with Musk citing a design goal of one terawatt of compute capacity per year.

Why it matters: Terafab is the supply end of Optimus's compute stack: owning fab capacity would take Tesla's robot silicon out of the merchant queue. Locking TSMC out of operations keeps the execution risk — and a 1 TW/year ambition — entirely on Musk's companies, with Intel as the named technology partner.
